As on-line information and purchasing become the norm a large group of people are finding themselves excluded from mainstream systems. However, the solution of providing cash and paper solution is increasing non-economic and so via the Intelligent Transport Systems UK Mobility and Inclusion Forum which I Chair we are working to raise awareness of this problem in order to find technical solutions.
Decarbonisation Policy and impacts on lower income motorists
Recent protests by motorists about the economic impact of the London ULEZ extension epitomise the growing debate about how to improve air quality in terms of the impact on car users. Working with the Independent Transport Commission via a grant from the Rees Jeffries Road Fund, Kris is supervising research into the impact of different decarbonisation policies on lower income motorists. The results will enable government to understand more about who gains and who loses before they decide. www.theitc.org
Planning Stalemate – Voices Unheard
One reason for the UK’s failure over the years to meet housing targets is opposition from local residents. We are conducting research designed to overcome the natural tendency to oppose change via engaging jointly with potential newcomers and the existing community. By discussing housing design, allocation, effects on local services both positive as well as negative impacts can be addressed and resolved via priorities and trade-offs. We have designed a Toolkit for supporting such an exercise which is being used by Local Authorities at Parish, District and Borough levels. The clear outcome is that one size doesn’t fit all.
