Is access to transport a far more important reason for inequality than we realise?

One of the last research projects carried out by Social Research Associates (working with Temple for Transport for the North) was a ground-breaking and extensive investigation of the impact of poor access to transport in preventing social inclusion. The research included the development of a data tool to measure the risk of TRSE in the North and across England; surveys, interviews and focus groups with members of the public; and surveys and interviews with expert stakeholders. In total, this report draws on input from over 3,000 respondents across diverse areas and communities and provides an in-depth empirical examination of TRSE across the North. Some of the key results highlighted the role of car travel in enabling employment, the growing problem of lack of access to online travel information and the deterrents to mobility due to shared use of pavements.

The findings have led to a national debate about the effects of lack of access to transport including current research into the impacts of different decarbonisation policies on low income groups including motorists. This issue is now being further explored via a new research project funded by the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund and being undertaken by the Independent Transport Commission with Kris as an ITC Commissioner acting as a link between research partner (Temple) and the ITC Steering Group led by Steve Norris.
